US welcomes quick IAEA ruling on India nuclear industry

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AFP) — The White House on Friday welcomed the speed at which the United Nation's nuclear watchdog agency approved an inspections agreement for India's civilian nuclear program.

The safeguards agreement, approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Friday, is a pre-condition to a deal signed in 2005 under which the United States will supply New Delhi with nuclear fuel and technology for civilian purposes.

"We welcome the IAEA board of governors approval by consensus of the India safeguards agreement, paving the way for moving forward with the United States-India Civil Nuclear Initiative," said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.
