Israel fears Hezbollah strike in western Africa

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israeli authorities fear that the Lebanese Hezbollah movement is planning an attack against its nationals in western Africa to avenge the death of one of its leaders, officials said on Monday.

Israeli officials have in recent days traveled to western Africa, home to a large Lebanese Shiite community, and warned Israelis living and working there of the impending threat, a security official told AFP.

The exact nature of the threat was not specified.

Israel went on high alert after the Shiite Hezbollah organisation accused it of responsibility for the murder of its top commander Imad Mughnieh, who died in a mysterious car explosion in Damascus in February.
