BEIJING (AFP) — Norway's Olaf Tufte produced a storming finish to win the men's single sculls at the Beijing Olympic rowing competition on Saturday.
The defending champion timed his race perfectly to win by 0.80sec from Czech Ondrej Synek in a time of 6min 59.83sec.
World champion Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand had led at the three-quarter mark but faded to finish third.
Sweden's Lassi Karonen had been the fastest qualifier for the final but was disappointing, finishing down in sixth and last, almost eight seconds off the pace.
