The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was down 130.74 points at 2,319.87 on a turnover of 35.9 billion yuan (5.2 billion dollars).

The Shanghai A-share index lost 136.98 points, or 5.33 percent, to close at 2,435.12 on turnover of 35.7 billion yuan, while the Shenzhen A-share index fell 43.28 points, or 5.92 percent, to 687.62 on turnover of 15.3 billion yuan.
