McCain slams Obama for 'retreat' strategy in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Republican White House hopeful John McCain Monday accused Barack Obama of embracing retreat and failure in Iraq, in a withering critique of his Democratic foe's leadership credentials.

McCain said Obama had enough "ambition to be president" but seemed to lack the "judgement to be the next commander in chief."

"In matters of national security, good judgement will be at a premium in the term of the next president -- as we were all reminded 10 days ago by events in the nation of Georgia," McCain said in Florida.

Obama however, fresh from a new vow to repel Republican attacks, set off on a tour of battleground states, sparking new speculation about his vice presidential running mate, who could be named as soon as this week.
