BRUSSELS (AFP) — Philippe Saint-Jean has resigned as coach of Belgian first division side Mons on Thursday, citing medical reasons.

In a statement the club thanked Saint-Jean for what they described as his "courageous decision" which comes after last Sunday's 5-0 drubbing by Ghent on the first day of the new season.

Assistant coach Thierry Pister will act as caretaker manager before a permanent successor is named.

The Belgian press suggest the most likely candidate for the post is Jean-Francois De Sart, coach of the Belgian Olympic side that made it through to Wednesday's semi-finals where they were beaten 4-1 by Nigeria.
