US warns Russia on key Georgian port

CRAWFORD, Texas (AFP) — The White House warned Russia on Saturday against building permanent facilities in and around Georgia's key Black Sea port of Poti, saying this would violate a ceasefire deal.

"There are very specific requirements for Russian withdrawal. Putting up permanent facilities and checkpoints are inconsistent with the agreement," spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters.

"We are in contact with the various parties to obtain clarification," he said, as US President George W. Bush spent time on his Texas ranch.

Russian tanks and troops on Saturday held positions around Poti and a senior general said they were there to stay.
