SONOMA, California (AFP) — Helio Castroneves posted his first win of the season by capturing the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.
On Sunday the Brazilian did it in a backup car, just four days after a transporter fire severely damaged his No. 1 vehicle and pit equipment.
It was Castroneves 13th career win and snapped a 29-race winless skid.
Castroneves' Team Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe, also using replacement equipment due to the transporter fire this past Wednesday in Wyoming, was second.
Tony Kanaan was third, followed by Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick.
Series leader Scott Dixon finished 12th and saw his lead over Castroneves cut to just 43 points atop the standings.
