Israeli activist detained on return from Gaza protest

ASHKELON, Israel (AFP) — An Israeli who sailed to the Gaza Strip with a group of pro-Palestinian activists was in police custody on Wednesday after returning to Israel overland from the besieged enclave.

US-born Jeff Halper was being held in a cell in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon ahead of an appearance before a magistrate.

"He was arrested yesterday for having entered a restricted territory illegally," his lawyer Yavon Gat told AFP.

Israelis are generally banned from entering Gaza, which has been ruled since June 2007 by Hamas, an Islamist group blacklisted by Israel as a terrorist organisation.
