America stands at 'defining moment' : Obama

DENVER, Colorado (AFP) — Barack Obama will Thursday tell Americans their country faces a "defining moment" at home and vow to keep them safe from foreign threats in a dazzling finale to the Democratic convention.

In excerpts from his speech accepting the party's historic nomination, Obama also was to metaphorically handcuff Republican John McCain to the unpopular presidency of George W. Bush and vow to end the Iraq war.

"We meet at one of those defining moments -- a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more," Obama said in the excerpts released to the media.
