BERLIN (AFP) — Cologne's Turkish defender Umit Ozat collapsed during Friday's win at Karlsruhe and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Ozat lost consciousness after 25 minutes of the match for no apparent reason and was stretchered off after teammates signalled to the bench he needed treatment. The match resumed five minutes later.
Cologne general manager Michael Meier said Ozat swiftly regained consciousness but "he has been taken to hospital for cardiological tests as a precaution and will stay in overnight for observation.
In a similar incident on August 20, David Sommeil of French side Valenciennes was taken unconscious to hospital. He regained consciousness six days later but was unable to speak.
