Taiwanese join Nike's global charity run

TAIPEI (AFP) — Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou led more than 20,000 people Sunday in a charity race billed by sponsor Nike as the world's biggest one-day running event, with races taking place in 25 cities worldwide.

The Nike 10K Human Race was launched to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund and the ninemillion.org campaign sponsored by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

The US sportswear giant estimates that more than one million people will take part in cities including Melbourne, Shanghai, New York, London, Madrid, Paris, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Joining the Taiwanese president was Sung Yu-chi, who won a bronze medal in taekwondo at the Beijing Games.
