Police hold 280 in anti-Republican rallies

ST PAUL, Minnesota (AFP) — Police on Tuesday arrested scores more demonstrators during a march outside the Republican convention, bringing the number held in two days to around 280 people.

Matthew Bombrom, assistant chief of St Paul police said "about 280 folks or something like that" had been arrested in the Minnesota city for rioting since Monday as clashes broke out with police for the second day running.

Tuesday's trouble flared during a rally by several hundred protestors from the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign in the city.

A group of protestors tussled with mounted police and were quickly isolated from the crowd and subdued with plastic handcuffs, an AFP correspondent saw.
