US television legend Ed McMahon dies at 86

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — US television legend Ed McMahon, best known for his long-running role as Johnny Carson's sidekick on "The Tonight Show", died early Tuesday aged 86, his spokesman confirmed.
McMahon passed away at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles having been in ill health for some time though his precise cause of death was not released by publicist Howard Bragman.
"I knew Ed a long time," Bragman told NBC4 television in Los Angeles. "He was just one of the kindest people you ever wanted to meet. People responded to his authenticity."
Although his career spanned more than 50 years, it was McMahon's 30-year involvement with Carson on "The Tonight Show" that cemented his status as one of the entertainment industries most beloved figures.
