Companies can't gain a competitive edge if they can't analyze the data about their businesses. A recent report by IT consulting company Delphi Group suggests that by designing an information architecture—or enterprisewide hierarchical classification system for data—companies can make business information such as transaction data, sales forecasts, memoranda, e-mails and so on easier to find, and therefore useful to the employees who need such data to make business decisions. But an informal approach to information architecture and a lack of leadership from CIOs continue to bog down enterprise data searches at many companies.
