Data breaches make ID theft an issue for Congressional hearings. ChoicePoint, the vendor that aggregates public records data for background checks and other services, said that "organized crime may have hijacked our legitimate data uses." In late February, the company alerted more than 144,000 consumers in all 50 states that their identities were compromised after perpetrators impersonated ChoicePoint clients to access consumer records data. As ChoicePoint announced stricter controls on its customer verification process, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter told the media his panel would hold hearings on ID theft and information brokers.
