Stockpiling of Methyl Bromide Challenged in Court

WASHINGTON, DC (ENS) — The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) filed a lawsuit this week to force the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to disclose the size of the nation’s stockpile of methyl bromide, considered the most potent ozone depleting chemical still in widespread use.
The chemical is produced industrially for fumigation of soil prior to planting, and post-harvest treatments of commodities such as grain. In pre-plant treatments, methyl bromide is used on more than 100 U.S. crops to control nematodes, weeds, fungus and other pests.
