Ameren Expands PCB Investigations in Illinois

CHICAGO, Illinois (ENS) — --> Officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 office have asked that the energy company Ameren and its subsidiaries expand their investigation into liquids contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, found in natural gas distribution systems in Alton and East St. Louis.

Ameren, under the direction of the federal and state environmental protection agencies, recently inspected the gas supply equipment at Alton Middle School and 12 residences in East St. Louis.

The gas equipment in the school did not contain PCBs but three liquid collection points outside the school were found to have liquids contaminated with PCBs and Ameren removed them.

Low levels of PCBs were discovered in liquids in gas meters...
