BY MY COUNT, LAST YEAR'S BAG of certifiable masterpieces came down to just two movies: Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich, which I've already praised to the skies, and Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvy. I don't expect either to get its due on Oscar night, but why should they? If the Academy was into recognizing quality for its own sake, even PBS wouldn't telecast the show.
Me, I don't need masterpieces to be happy. Show me enough moments I can treasure and I'll show you a good year, from Reese Witherspoon barking, "Fill me up" in Election to Ah-nold saying, "I want to talk to you about Thomas Aquinas" in End Days--unofficial right-wing answer to Dogma; from Jude Law singing "Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano" in The Talented Mr. Ripley to Satan crooning "Up There" in South Park: Bigger, Longer...
