Neal Karlen calls his memoir "Shanda," a Yiddish word that means "disgrace." It's a good description of a man who once told "Hebe" jokes, dated shiksas (non-Jews) and turned himself into what he calls a "Jewish Uncle Tom." Fortunately, Karlen found his way out of the self-loathing desert. He talked to NEWSWEEK's Marc Peyser.

Why did you decide to call the book "Shanda"? "Mensch" and even "schmuck" are certainly better-known words.
