The dog days of summer are almost here, but if you choose a room air conditioner carefully, you won't have to sweat your energy bills. Start at energystar .gov , operated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Click on Appliances, then AC, to find room coolers ranked by their energy-efficiency ratio, as measured by cooling power (BTUs) divided by required electricity (watts). To qualify as Energy Star, units must exceed federal efficiency standards by 10 percent. Most big manufacturers make qualifying machines. Though they cost a bit more, they'll shave your energy bills over time.
