For those who have arrived in Cuiabá from the Amazon, the city acts as a gateway to the rest of Brazil. From the earliest times, São Paulo was the main source of settlers arriving in the Mato Grosso, though until the twentieth century the route followed the river systems. These days, the BR-364 runs all the way (over 1700km) from Cuiabá to São Paulo, with several daily buses taking around 24 hours minimum. On the headwaters of the Pantanal’s Rio São Lourenço, two to three hours from Cuiabá, the industrial town of RONDONÓPOLIS acts as a base for visiting the local Bororo Indians.
