Shortage of space on the rock means that places to stay are at a premium, and you're much better off visiting on day-trips from Algeciras (buses on the hour and half-hour; 30min) or La Línea. The only remotely budget beds are at the friendly Toc H Hostel on Line Wall Rd (tel 73431; about £6 a person) and these are none too comfortable and almost always occupied by long-term residents or the tiny, eccentric Seruya's Guest House at 92 Irish Town (tel 73220; about £15 a double), which is also invariably full. There are also dorm beds at the basic Emile Youth Hostel at the Montagu Bastion, Line Wall Rd (tel 51106; about £12 for a dorm bed including breakfast).
