Are the buccaneers in America's corporate boardrooms capable of being embarrassed by their excessive pay and perks?
That's an underlying - if unstated - premise of a Securities and Exchange Commission proposal on executive compensation.
The measure up for SEC approval next week would force corporations to shed more light on the salary and other benefits provided their executives.
Who knows? With greater public scrutiny may come greater restraint in awarding CEO compensation.
The SEC proposal is a good step, even if the obscenely generous pay of top executives has resisted every other effort at moderation. For SEC chairman Christopher Cox, the move helps ease somewhat the concerns that the former Republican congressman from California might go too...
