Minority hiring gains no ground

While one head coaching vacancy remains, it has been a disappointing season for those in the NFL who tout minority hiring. Only the Kansas City Chiefs hired an African American head coach, and because the Chiefs landed New York Jets coach Herm Edwards, the number of black coaches in the league stayed the same at six.
NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue last week said he was disappointed that more minority candidates weren't hired to fill vacancies in Buffalo, Detroit, Green Bay, Houston, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York or St. Louis. But Tagliabue said that he did not think the hiring trend was a permanent situation, and that he would wait to see what happens next year before he becomes overly concerned.
