William C. Yerkes, 84, of Lansdale, formerly of Plymouth Meeting, a retired brigadier general in the Pennsylvania National Guard, died of pneumonia Monday at Central Montgomery Hospital in Lansdale.
Gen. Yerkes served as assistant commandant and then commandant of the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Academy in Indiantown Gap for nine years until his retirement in 1979.
He had previously commanded nuclear-capable missile units in the Philadelphia area for six years. His other assignment with the Guard included serving with the Philadelphia Air Defense, with an infantry regimental combat team in Norristown, and with an antiaircraft battalion.
