Double-digit tuition increases could be in store at many New Jersey colleges and universities under the deep cuts Gov. Corzine propose for higher education.
The president of Thomas Edison State College in Trenton called the reductions "catastrophic." Rowan University's leader worried about making public education unaffordable.
The president of Rutgers University forecast not only higher tuition but layoffs, the cancellation of hundreds of classes, and reductions in essential student services.
"Rutgers would simply not be the same university," president Richard L. McCormick said in a statement. "I don't see how the governor can cut higher education this severely and achieve the economic growth that is vital for New Jersey."
