A big man with a deep laugh, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue brings his passion for theater, love of music, and engaging personality to his newest role as president of Villanova University.

Donohue, 53, a former theater department chairman, officially took office earlier this month as the university's 32d president. He said he was slightly surprised at his selection.

He knew the Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin was stepping down as president, and he was asked by his order, the Augustinians, to be a candidate. But as is his way, the decision was a matter of obedience and faith.

"I thought, 'I like what I do. I like directing. I like the students. I would have to give everything up' " Donohue said, recalling the days before his selection.
