Hudson City Bancorp to buy up to 57 million shares of its stock

Hudson City Bancorp Inc. today said it will repurchase up to 57 million shares - about 10 percent of its common stock outstanding as of Monday.

This is the seventh stock repurchase program approved by Hudson's board of directors. There are 2.6 million shares remaining to be repurchased under an existing repurchase program. Repurchased shares will be held as treasury stock for general corporate use, the bank said.

Hudson City Bancorp Inc., of Paramus, is the parent company of Hudson City Savings Bank, which has five branches in Southern New Jersey - three in Camden County and one each in Burlington and Gloucester Counties.

Hudson City has 94 branches altogether and $29.5 billion in assets, making it the largest savings bank headquartered in New Jersey....
