State budget forces Rutgers to slash costs
0 Comments | Philadelphia Inquirer, The, July, 2006 | by Leonard N. Fleming
Faced with dwindling state funds and a $66 million budget crunch, Rutgers University officials yesterday announced $50 million in spending reductions that will freeze hiring and eliminate staff, course offerings and sports programs.
The Rutgers Board of Governors voted for the cuts to take effect in the 2006-07 school year in the aftermath of state lawmakers' decision last week to drastically slash funds dedicated to higher education to help forestall a budget crisis.
Rutgers University has 50,000 students who study at campuses in Newark, Camden and New Brunswick/Piscataway.
The state cuts, along with increased fuel, utilities and insurance costs, have left Rutgers with a total shortfall of $80 million, officials said.
