Cephalon's revenue soars with Provigil

Cephalon Inc. yesterday reported a 54 percent increase in second-quarter revenue on strong sales of its biggest-selling sleep-disorder drug, Provigil, beating analysts' expectations.

The Frazer company said it earned $55.4 million, or 83 cents a share, in the quarter ended June 30, compared with a loss of $249 million, or $4.29 a share, in the year-earlier period, when Cephalon took large acquisition-related charges. Revenue was $440.1 million, up from $286 million.

"The quality of our earnings is strong because of the Provigil sales growth," said Frank Baldino Jr., founder and chief executive officer of Cephalon, referring to the company's treatment for narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and night-shift-work sleep disorder.
