The 21,000 student tickets available for each of Penn State's seven home football games sold in June like kegs on homecoming weekend, consumed in a record 13 days, two months quicker than in 2005. The older Nittany Lions fans' enthusiasm is just as frothy. So far they have purchased more than 90,000 season tickets, the highest total since 2001.

And their fevered pursuit of seats for Penn State's Sept. 9 game at Notre Dame has created one of the greatest demands in Irish history. In fact, only a handful of Beaver Stadium seats remain for the entire 2006 season, and those are for the three games that make up the off-Broadway portion of an otherwise challenging Nittany Lions schedule - Akron, Youngstown State and Temple.
