A gorgeous confection, packed with gargantuan gowns and pornographic displays of pastrystuffs, Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is also a sharp, smart look at the isolation, ennui and supercilious affairs of the rich, famous and famously pampered. Not Paris Hilton, exactly - but maybe someone called Versailles Hilton.

Coppola's eye-popping and witty gem is a retro reality show on the life of a skinny aristo-brat, situated just a few centuries past. The picture reimagines the French court of Louis XVI and the 14-year-old Austrian archduchess - played with sweet, sublime airheadedness by Kirsten Dunst - who, by dint of political alliance, becomes the young prince's bride, and then the young king's queen.
