Former NFL coach Butch Davis will return to the sideline as coach at North Carolina, which is 1-9 this season. He will replace the fired John Bunting, the former Eagles linebacker, the school announced yesterday. Davis, 54, coached the Miami Hurricanes from 1995 to 2000, compiling a 51-20 record before leaving for the NFL's Cleveland Browns.

He went 24-35 with the Browns before resigning in 2004. Boise State running back Ian Johnson, the nation's leader in touchdowns with 21, was in a San Jose, Calif., hospital with a partially collapsed left lung. Johnson was injured Saturday during the No. 13 Broncos' 23-20 win at San Jose State.
