Excerpt from the testimony of Lewis I. "Scooter" Libby before a U.S. grand jury on March 5, 2004. Libby is now on trial for perjury deriving from this testimony. Several sources have suggested that Libby helped leak the identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA operative and the wife of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson; some have said the leak was in retaliation for Wilson's critical statements regarding the Bush policy in Iraq. Libby has said he could not have been the source of the leak because he first heard of it in a July 2003 conversation with newscaster Tim Russert of NBC, a claim Russert and others dispute.
