Like many of you, I was insulted by the words of talk-show hosts Don Imus and Bernard McGuirk and the manner in which some of the news media tried to make an excuse for them, claiming that hip-hop artists use the same sexist language in their lyrics.

For decades, Imus, in the words of Al Roker of NBC, "has danced around that fire" of racism and sexism. Whether it is his calling the talented PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill a "cleaning lady" or his allowing a guest to insult champion tennis players Venus and Serena Williams by suggesting they are better suited to be on the front cover of the National Geographic Magazine, Imus had compiled a history of hate, particularly toward people of color and women.
