Courier-Post offers buyouts to some

Buyouts have been offered to staffers at the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill and at four other Gannett Co. Inc. newspapers in New Jersey. A group of 166 full-time employees over 55 with 15 years of service was offered buyouts. The news comes amid word of trouble at two other area newspaper companies. The Journal Register Co.

in Yardley, which publishes five newspapers in the Philadelphia suburbs and one in New Jersey, yesterday reported a $72.2 million loss for its first quarter. The Easton Express newspaper, part of the Penn Jersey Advance Inc., a division operated by the Newhouse publishing family, offered buyouts to 44 employees April 29, hoping to trim 11 jobs. Executives at all three companies blamed declines in advertising revenue exacerbated by the slowdown in the economy.
