Carlos Arroyo is heading for Israel, making the veteran point guard and former Orlando Magic player the latest NBA free agent to head overseas, ESPN.com reported last night. Arroyo's agent, Leon Rose , confirmed the signing to ESPN. Maccabi Tel-Aviv coach Effy Birenboim told Israel's national sports network, Sport5, that the deal was the richest in the team's history.
According to Israeli sources, Arroyo will earn an estimated $2.5 million next season - roughly the NBA equivalent of a $5 million salary before taxes - as part of a three-year contract. He can opt out to return to the NBA after each of the next two seasons if he chooses. A native of Puerto Rico, Arroyo averaged 6.9 points and 3.5 assists for the Magic last season.
