Sports in Brief: Red Wings won't offer Chelios a new contract

The Detroit Red Wings will not offer 47-year-old defenseman  Chris Chelios  a new contract, general manager  Ken Holland  said yesterday.

Holland said the veteran wanted to play another season. He told the Detroit News it was "kind of understood last summer" when Chelios signed a one-year deal that it would be his last.

The Hockey Hall of Fame will announce its next class today. Among the first-time-eligible players are  Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull ,  Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch, Alexander Mogilny  and  Dave Andreychuk .

Chicago Bulls and White Sox owner  Jerry Reinsdorf  has promised to make an offer by Friday to buy the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes and keep the team in Arizona, his attorney said.
