A little help from his friends

Dick Vermeil's friends won't let three losses discourage him. And he has some group of friends.

Charles Barkley, former NBA star. Fred Dryer, maybe better known for his acting than his NFL career. Claude Humphrey, a standout at defensive end for Vermeil with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even the captain of the high school football team he coached in 1960 reached out to Vermeil this week as the Kansas City Chiefs, a preseason Super Bowl favorite, sank to 0-3 for the first time since 1980.

"We all need a little pumping up from time to time," Vermeil said Wednesday. "I need it."
