Steve Spurrier did the University of Florida a favor.
The ol' ball coach withdrew his name from consideration Thursday for the Gators' football job, a vacancy created when Ron Zook was dismissed. The lame-duck coach has three games left, including Saturday at Vanderbilt.
It is long past time for UF and Spurrier to move on. In a release, Spurrier said, "(Athletics director Jeremy Foley ) called me several times this week trying to set up a meeting after the season with him and President ( Bernie ) Machen . They were obviously making an effort to meet with me."
Obviously. After the season.
Coach Visor's ego wouldn't permit him to become just another candidate. Florida has a new president, one who clearly wants to create his own legacy and it's not with Spurrier, who I think will coach again at the collegiate level to re-establish ...
