New file-sharing ventures start legit

Amid legal wrangling, the latest twist in song-swapping is this: It's going legit.
Former outlaw Shawn Fanning is working with the entertainment industry on his latest venture, Snocap. And he's teamed with former Grokster CEO Wayne Rosso, another onetime combatant with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Snocap has created a way to "fingerprint" a sound recording. When placed on a file-sharing network, it will send users to a screen asking them to pay for the song, or access a trial version that will be free for a limited time.
Snocap, set to launch later this year, has deals with Universal Music and Sony BMG, as well as several independent firms. Rosso's new MashBoxx file-sharing service will work with Snocap.
