Airlines keep VIP clubs to keep fliers

The big traditional U.S. airlines are operating fewer airport clubs than before the Sept.11 terrorism, but none appear poised to close down that part of their business.
Without the sanctuary afforded by the airlines' private clubs, says former American marketing executive Rolfe Shellenberger, "there would be a revolt among frequent travelers."
In all, the Big Six carriers -- American, United, Delta, Northwest, Continental and US Airways -- operate 193 airport clubs in the USA and abroad. That compares with about 230 in 2001.
