President Bush spoke Monday with USA TODAY's Judy Keen about filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court. These excerpts have been edited for length.
Q: Do you want to move the Supreme Court in a more conservative direction? A: This is a responsibility I take very seriously, and I have indicated in the course of two campaigns that I intend to nominate a person with great integrity and intellect and experience who will faithfully interpret the Constitution. Q: Do you believe the court is not conservative enough? A: I'm making the pick based upon the criterion I just outlined. I'm looking at a wide range of candidates, people from different walks of life. I will begin to hone in on a handful of candidates over the course of the next few weeks and then will submit my nomination....
