On Jan. 7, freelance journalist Jill Carroll -- on assignment for The Christian Science Monitor -- was kidnapped by unknown gunmen. Her abduction took place about 300 yards from the office of leading Sunni politician Adnan al-Dulaimi. Carroll had gone to his office to interview him, but he was not there. Carroll's interpreter, Allan Enwiyah, an Iraqi Christian, was found shot to death a few blocks away.
Jan. 17 -- Carroll's captors issue a statement demanding the release of Iraqi female prisoners. They threaten to kill Carroll if the demand is not met.
*A video of Carroll, taken by her captors, is aired on Al-Jazeera satellite television.
