*CBS' How I Met Your Mother (tonight, 8 ET/PT) offers a funny salute to the teen pop stars of the '80s -- a decade, the show insists, that didn't arrive in Canada until the '90s. That, anyway, is the writers' excuse for turning Robin into "Robin Sparkles," Canadian teen idol, and it's one of the best ideas the show has had.
Mother can be a bit frenzied, but it boasts one of the best young comedy ensembles on TV today, and they're even better now that the show has moved past the forced soap-opera distress that lingered from last season's finale. If the series' slow start chased you away, tonight's episode may just draw you back in. *No slow start for Heroes (NBC, 9 ET/PT), fall's biggest success.
