Apple CEO Steve Jobs is trying to start a stampede to make music downloaded from iTunes or any online store playable on any device without restrictions.
In a major pronouncement that joins a growing chorus of discontent about copy restrictions, Jobs on Tuesday posted a manifesto, "Thoughts on Music," on Apple's website.
It argues that digital rights management (DRM) technology, which record companies require in digital music files to limit where and how songs can be played, has failed to stop piracy and impedes development of the online music industry.
Within minutes, the essay was picked up by bloggers and circulated worldwide.
