Q: You're talking about making investments that are not going to pay off for 10 or 15 years. How do you make the decision to invest in something that's that far out and that expensive?
A: You can't delegate.
Yes, the technical work and a lot of the commercial work, in early stages, is being done by someone else. But the decision to make these bets has to be the responsibility of the senior leadership team. It's got to come from people that have succeeded at things and failed at things.
Then you have to make a judgment: Do we have the skills to solve the problem? And are we the best in the world to work on that problem? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then you should go and work on that.
