After a theatrical run that didn't seem that much longer than the running time of some Stanley Kubrick films, Color Me Kubrick (2007, Magnolia, unrated, $30) is on DVD. John Malkovich stars as a con artist who palms himself off as the director. Here are three portrayals of famed filmmakers.
The Wings of Eagles
1957, Warner, unrated, $20
Navy aviator Frank "Spig" Wead, trying to pursue a screenwriting career while overcoming paralysis, visits a Hollywood director. John Wayne plays Wead, and the director is named John Dodge, an in-joke because actor Ward Bond is playing Eagles director John Ford. The biopic is uneven, but fans savor the abundance of Ford in it, from its slapstick to its sentiment.
