BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Quiet, so quiet.

Thousands of students from Virginia Tech sat so still Tuesday, barely moving, no shuffling, no waving to friends, no sound at all really, at the Cassell Coliseum during a remembrance of those who were killed and wounded in Monday's massacre.

"We cannot undo yesterday's events, but we can sit in patient silence with those who mourn," said Lutheran minister Bill King. He called for a moment of silence.

There was no need.

From the minute the honor guard entered the arena, and those in the auditorium rose and stood at attention without being prompted, the orange and maroon T-shirts of the student body, the gray suits of the dignitaries, the dresses and khakis and jackets of the family and friends barely...
